THE MIGHTY ANGELA

We all know that each and every one of us is strong in different ways , through distinct  skills. Each one of us has our own individual talents in which others may not  have. However talented we may be, there are really times that we face depression.
Depression, one common and serious type of medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way. Those who experienced depression need attention and accommodation. But how can you survive depression? What can you do in order to prevent having this medical condition?

Angela Mangana, a student from ACT and also one of the active leaders experienced that kind of medical condition. It was really hard for her to recover knowing that a lot of people bashed her out and saying boorish words. But she really believed that she can survive. “Trust me, it’s the worst. It’s a long story but surely is because of all the fear I have in my head and the words that the people around me have blurted out. It has given me anxiety but still, I continued to move further with the help of love.” she said. Given that she still continues her life with the help of love, one of her inspiration also is her family and especially her mom. Her mom really works hard to earn a living. Angela’s mom always supports them no matter what. Her mom never failed to impress them. “She told me how to be independent and stand for myself.” she added. And of course, she also has this non-blood-related guy who served as one of her living motivation in all things she does. He is no other than, Mr. Vince Barimbad, a grade 10 student also in the same school. Angela said that Vince inspires her so much unlike any other guy she had been.
She really loves the things that she does and likes. It gives her the reason to keep living and give her pure happiness that could never be given by anything or anyone else. She also loves the people around her and she does not want to choose any of them because she equally loves them.
One of her hobbies is golf. She really likes playing it and wants to aim more gold medals. “I can’t really count how many medals I already have. I just know that I am hoping for more.” she said. She started loving the sport since she was four however, she took it seriously at the age six. She is proud of herself because of what she has achieved. She received trophies and medals and won in national tournaments. She hopes and pray that she could reach and join competitions abroad.
On the other hand, she likes to be a worker with a stable financial status in the future. She does not state any work because she knows that in the future, God will always be there to guide and to lead her at the right path.

After such time, she was relieved of course with her depression because of the love and the things that she loves surrounding her. Since then, she is a free spirited woman with a kind and dignified heart. She continues her life and as of now she is ready to go to another journey of her life—The Senior High life.
Life may be rough to get through but sooner we get to learn the things that makes us stronger. And because of that, we still continue to fight on with every battle we face. The battle of our life and the battle through our journey.
Let us end this article with Angela's message to aspirants of the sport. " I would like to tell all the people out there, young or old, rich or poor, who would want to go through the journey of golf, that this sport won't be easy. It would take every effort and time to master this sport. It may look easy on the eyes but it really isn't. Golf is not just a physical sport, but it also needs to be played mentally with the right attitude. It you want to learn, go for it. If you want to achieve success, work for it. It won't be easy but it sure would be worth it."

THE ASIANISTA NIGHTINGALE

A usual school morning in Asian College of Technology is not always gleeful. Busy streets and busy lives. Weariness is written all over the faces of the students who haven’t got much sleep lately. Preschoolers still cry out to their parents desperately wanting to go home and go back to sleep. Despite of the burnout of students, joy can still be found. As the saying goes, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times when one remembers to turn on the light.” Jehramae Trangia, a fourteen-year-old girl manages to cheer her classmates up with her joyful persona. You can clearly detect the merriness in her whenever you see her just like any artist out there, Jehramae started singing at a young age. She started singing when she was seven years old. Throughout the years, her voice has improved. She took vocal lessons, she was not self-taught. Have you ever wondered whether you have a talent or not? She never considered singing as a talent in the first place until her mom opened up a door for her to walk in on. It was her mother who discovered her talent.

Singing is a way of expressing one’s feelings. It is a form of art. Many artists usually write their own songs. Each line articulates an emotion. Every line tells a story. Jehramae is fond of writing her own songs. She writes about her unexpressed feelings. She writes about love and euphoria. You get this odd feeling every time you listen to a song. A song that has a deep story and meaning. You somehow relate what you’re feeling through the song. When you’re sad, melancholic music is by your side. It fuels up your sadness. Music somehow depends on the artist’s mood. Not all artists write their own songs. Some songs you hear might be written by other people.

A musician has many supporters and fans, Jehramae as well, has hers. She loves her fans so much. They have been with her in every show she takes part of. According to her, she loves her fans because they cheer her up with their reassuring smiles before she performs. They would defend her against her haters. They would do anything for her. Behind her success are her loyal fans. She considers her fandom a second family.

Jehramae’s family and friends are always there for her as well as her fans. She dedicates her success to her family. But on top of all that, is our LORD. He will always be her no. 1 inspiration.

Last year, on the 26th of July marked the day of her performance in Tawag ng Tanghalan. A singing contest from a famous show on ABS-CBN, It’s Showtime! You might have heard of it. It is a famous noon time entertainment. She performed in Tawag ng Tanghalan as a Visayas contingent. She sang “Fight Song” by the famous singer Rachel Platten. She might never have sung that perfectly but the emotions were evident when she sang it. She was proclaimed the new champion that day.

You might wonder why she sang that. You might have thought about another song she could have sung. She could have chosen another song to sing but she picked that song to empower her fellowmen . To spread optimism. To influence her supporters. According to her, an ending is always a new beginning. And it is never too late to be brand new.

THE ALMIGHTY SIR JASON

Sir Jason during the World Teacher's day.
Asianistas scream as they hear his incredible accent. They shout as they see his amazing dancing. And they also stay silent as he enters as that English teacher to the room full of students waiting and wanting to learn from him.
That’s just how every weekday with Sir Jason Isaac Rabi III goes.
If I had a schedule like his, I would probably be lying in my death bed. But what amazes me the most is that he is able to fit all of these in his busy schedule. He considers his busy schedule as a challenge. He enjoys it. “Life is fun and challenging. In this generation, one should have a diverse set of skills to cope up with the dynamic society and industry. Life has been filled with challenges I was able to cope up with the skills I honed and honing.” He said. He always enjoyed a challenge he can compete with in his life. It spices everything up and makes it a little bit difficult but at the same time, it is also fun.
He is one talented soul. He is one of a kind. We all know him for his dancing, public speaking, and as our fun teacher but that is not all. He also enjoys mountain trekking at Candulawan or any fund raising activities that involves trekking, also biking at Awihao, Toledo City and cycling at Toledo to Pinamungajan. He also choreographs dances, mixes music, and do voice overs. He usually does these for school activities or when he helps out friends outside of the campus. He is also very fond of watching documentaries (ranging from Ecology to Astronomy science) and sleeping. Despite his busy schedule, he tries to do it all and fit them all in. But usually, the sleeping part is what he frequently does. I mean, who doesn’t?
Behind all these successes, he doesn’t consider himself successful. “I don’t really consider myself successful. If I do, I will plateau.” he said. He challenges himself to be the best he can be. He also doesn’t consider himself inspired, he calls it being driven. “I don’t consider myself being inspired, but I see myself as driven to continuous growth. I’m never satisfied with myself or sometimes, the outcome of my work. I see points of improvement and work on it for my growth, so I can facilitate such growth to the learners.” he added.
He is one person who is always finding ways to improve himself. It amazes me because some people gets tired and lazy to improve and just gets contented of what they are right now. In that way, you won’t be able to see the best version of yourself. All the things he’s doing is not just for himself. As a teacher, he also does these for his students. He makes it as a guide, an inspiration to all his students. “Learning is a never ending quest.” they say. And even to the infamous, Sir Jason Rabi III, it applies. There is always room for improvements. Better is not enough, you’ll have to be the best you can be.
Everyone has his or her own ways. Everyone has different challenges. We all have our ups and downs. Some people give up. Some people don’t. We all should not give. Like Sir Jason, he takes challenges as fun. Those challenges are like the icing on top of the cake. It spices everything up. It’s no fun having to do the same thing again and again. Maybe a little challenge will do the work. Challenge yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself.

The Legendary PSALM AQUINO

Almost every student in the Junior High School Department knows him. Every student regard him as the most legendary student athlete and swimmer of his time and school. He is Psalm Deniel Aquino;born on June 14, 2002. He is the greatest swimmer and student athlete in ACT.

He first went onto fame somewhere in the Ber-months of 2014, when he was still Grade 6. That time, he clinched 10 x MILO gold medals and 1 x Silver Medal.  The achievements that he considers the biggest is being the two-time most outstanding swimmer in the whole Philippines, and reaching 3rd place in Palarong Pambansa 2015.“I consider my place in Palarong Pambansa to be my biggest win, since my opponents we’re as tall as 5’9 to 5’11”. He has also competed in International levels like the Ironkids 2015.

He started training in swimming when he was 8 years old, but stopped for a year and went back to training  when he was 10 years old. Besides swimming, his other hobbies are : Basketball, which is his main favorite sport, Archery, and he also sometimes plays Table Tennis with his friends.

The person who encouraged him to try swimming was his sister, since he envied her because her sister used to be a gold medalist. He tried out Karate-do, but he decided to quit days later since a girl kept trying to kick his private part during sparring.

Lately, he has lost a lot of competitions, but he stated “ I really don’t care, as long as I tried my best and as long as I broke my personal records". His motivations every time he competes is his Mother, who helps him stretch and flex before competitions and of course his girlfriend, Kelsey, who morally supports him during competitions.

Losing doesn't always mean defeat. It means we need to move forward and keep pounding. In the same way winning doesn't always mean victory.

Advice of a Young Champion

Admit it or not, we all liked to play badminton. I even remembered fighting with my classmates on who should use the badminton racket during our P.E classes. ACT, our school, has many talented badminton players like Dominic Ceballos, Dan Ballares, John Jacobe and Mark Cogtas is one of them.
The origin of this badminton career is just out of curiosity. Mark wanted to try what it’s like to play badminton. As time passes, he started to get interested and started to love it and this is where he is right now. Winning a gold medal in the 2017 district meet and participating in the 2017 Milo Olympics and Talisay City Division Meet. He stated that these (mainly him getting a gold medal) were his biggest achievements. It’s like he and the badminton racket were destined to be with each other. He also stated that during the 2017 district meet, he was competing for the gold medal with rival Elvince Gidayawan. They are actually in the same school and it is because they had gathered the most wins to compete for the title. He was very nervous at that time upon competing for the gold medal. I mean, who wouldn’t get nervous? Getting the first place is a very big accomplishment in our lives. Well,  just participating in an event is already a big achievement. A stepping stone to higher goals.

He also said that his inspirations are Dominic Ceballos and Dan Ballares. Both of them are also studying at ACT. He is also inspired by Lin Dan, one of the legends in badminton.
Going onto his personal life, he is also well-loved by his family. His parents spend enough time to support him with his craft by playing with him. As a kid, he  gets curious and ask questions to his parents. Often, he displays concern to them. He started a small business by selling ice pops because he wanted his father not to go abroad. He is silent in class, but he starts to talk when he is usually with his friends, according to his class adviser, Mrs. Cora Abarias. Mark also managed to excel in some subjects, but sometimes he has a hard time with other subjects. She also stated that he is artistic. He creates unique and creative objects with his ideas especially origami.
If ever you want to play badminton, then you’re in the right time and place. He said that to become a better player, you need:
Training– You can’t become a better player if you lack in training. Training includes a set of exercises that improves your speed (quick feet ladder drills), strength (lunges, squats, leg extensions, leg presses, leg curls, split squat jump, squat jump, shoulder presses and chest presses), flexibility (regular stretching) and endurance (running/jogging). You also need to play to improve your skills.
Inspiration- Being inspired makes you feel energized and motivated to play better just for someone. I mean, we do all have our inspirations, right?
Determination– It’s never wrong to try even though you are not good at particular stuff. With determination, you skills will further improve when you never give up and believe that you can do it.
At a very young age,  Mark achieved many things inside and outside of the school like those achievements I mentioned earlier. He had established himself as one of the top players of our school. What started out as a curiosity, turned into a hobby and turned into an actual career for him. We’re proud of you and keep going, Mark Jemzelle Cogtas!

A STRONG YOUNG WOMAN

Shanise is a girl with a good heart. She is willing to help her fellow students who are experiencing struggles. Most of the students look up to her. She is one of the best leaders that I have ever met. She puts passion in everything that she does; you can see it in her eyes. And when she laughs or talks about the things that she really loves, her eyes shine bright as those memories will always be in her heart. The girl that I am referring to is no other than Shanise Febreo Samoran.

Shanise is a 16 year old Grade 10 student. There is only about a month and a few days left for her and for her batch mates before the moving up ceremony. Shanise’s journey in JHS is indeed fun and memorable because for her it is where she discovered things—things that she didn’t know and expect that she can overcome.

“I never would have thought that I can make it. Everything is different in JHS, the level of difficulty in projects, activities, and lessons - at first, I was terrified because of that,” she said. Without a doubt, she can express her thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged. She gained new experiences during the past three years. “I was involved in a fight. I cried because of my grades. I experienced breakdown due to the tiredness that I felt.  Those things were very new to me,” she also said.

She is not quite sure if her excitement about their upcoming moving up ceremony goes a hundred percent since she does not want to leave her friends behind. They treat each other like a one big family.  Shanise has leadership skills. No wonder she was elected as the vice president of the Supreme Student Government (SSG). She is very approachable and friendly towards everyone. She smiles a lot. But sadly, everything has an ending. Nothing is permanent in this world, as well as her position of being the vice president.

“I feel sad because I have always liked serving and helping them (students). It was stressing but for the whole school year, it was fun. You get a chance to jam with other grade levels and get to know them. One of the things that I am surely going to miss is the way how they (lower levels) call me ‘Ate Shan’,” Shanise said.

I asked Bea Bacus, a Grade 10 student, about her comment or opinion about Shanise being the vice president. She said, “She is very active in all of the activities. She is responsible of her duties as an SSG officer.” And somehow, I agree about her statement because being an SSG officer is not easy. You need to utilize your time properly since you are not only focusing on your studies, but you are also focusing on being a servant to the whole student body.

She is also a good friend. She will be there for her friends whenever things start to fall apart.  I asked Bea about Shanise being a friend, as well. This is what she said.  “She is jamming, friendly, and kind. She ais knowledgeable, approachable and very responsible.  Shanise loves to share her thoughts that have been running around her mind, or in other words, she is talkative. She is cheerful. No wonder she has a lot of friends.

Shanise wants to be a Radiologic Technologist or known as Rad Tech, someday. Rad Tech is a healthcare professional that specializes in the imaging of human anatomy for the diagnosis and treatment of pathology. But she will take nursing. “Nursing is accessible. I am planning to work abroad someday where nursing is in demand,” she said.

Throughout her journey, she has learned a lot of things. She learned to be resilient even though when things get tough. Even though things do not go exactly as she has planned, she never gives up. She always sees goodness even in bad times.

WHEN PASSION GROWS ROOTS

We've all been through tough times and moments when we wanted to discover something new in life. We've all got dreams that had faded in the abyss as time passes by; dreams that we yearn to achieve. Each one of us dreams of being great one day. Being the star in our sky. Miss Jeanille Cogtas is unlike any other people. Miss Jeanille has been loyal to Asian College of Technology Integrated School for 14 years and still counting.

Passion is what keeps her from striving hard each day. She is a happy mother of two children (currently pregnant with the second child). Though she has been blessed with her children, there's no parent in this world that is perfect but for her, being a teacher makes her a better parent. "I couldn't be a better mother if I give up my job. To be honest, I am no good at home, can't cook, don't do household chores that much. Work is where I am good at and my work has taught  me in tremendous ways how to be a mother.", she said. Being a parent isn't simple, not a single parent in this world admitted that being a parent is not an easy job but no matter what the world throws at her, she can handle it.

Being contented on little things makes you want to achieve more. But her journey of being that star wasn't a road that's straight ahead, it was a bumpy ride. "So far I haven't really met such downfall yet but I've had obstacles in my life. However when those trials pinch me by the nose I always keep my faith though shaken.", she said.

Whenever we've encountered trials or problems we tend to feel like there's no light that can shine upon our midst. But that perspective is not for her, she tends to smile on problems by keeping so much faith in her grasps. "Once you're within her aura it's like your troubles mysteriously vanish in the blues due to her heartwarming smile and positive vive.“, said Dan Paolo Ballares with an immense joy that filled his eyes.

Being a teacher was only a vivid dream for her but suddenly faded away for she wanted to be something else. She wanted to be a dressmaker, "I really wanted to be a dressmaker however, I didn't think it is a good ambition. I just thought it's something I wanted to do not really a job.", she said.
She had ups and downs in her life but her passion in teaching is what keeps her to keep a vision of success. But at the end of the day, ACT will always be her home. "This is already home to me and has been part of who I am." she declared with pride and loyalty. So wherever she will be , ACT will be her home. Miss Jeanille isn't only a teacher nor a mother, she is THE teacher of ACT and THE mother for us, her students, her children.

Kurt Xander Cabural for Track and Field

We can barely see Kurt Xander Cabural walking around the school campus. He was a bashful type of person, but with his friends, he is outgoing and approachable. We can also notice that he doesn’t want to socialize with other students. Until his sport “track and field” helped him get the chance to come out of his shells and share his skills not just inside the walls of our school but possibly inside and outside the track. He even said that playing the sport  running requires self-confidence, “Running requires self-confidence” in order to have an extraordinary performance.

Cabural trained himself after he was chosen as the school’s representative for Track and field and running to compete for district as well as the division meet. He also mentioned during our interview that, “We need to sustain the heat of the sun so that during the competition, it wouldn’t be tough for us to run in the track.” He also admits that the training was so stressful. As an interviewer and a fellow Asianista, I am also proud that he valued and  cherished the sport which also gives honor to the school.

Xander Cabural showcased his skills through out the course of the event, owing to the fact that he earned various medals. During district meet, he earned 3 medals  (silver, bronze, and gold) while during the Division meet, he garnered 3 silvers and 1 bronze.

And because of his achievements he was given the opportunity to  be the torch bearer during the ACT– Bulacao Intramurals 2018. His family is definitely so proud of him that they also posted pictures of him at the social media. He hasn’t also been this proud of himself seeing his hard work in each picture.

Cabural really deserves the chance to  compete in the CVIRAA. It’ll be a lot of pressure but for sure he can do it. He still trains himself more compared to his previous condition because this competition is going to be more challenging.

We are so very proud of what you are into now, because the old “shyish” Xander is different now, but  that change is for the better. Just continue to strive harder until you can reach success. Tie your shoes tighter and run in the right path.

The running events for the district and division meets were held  at the Minglanilla Oval. Because of his skills, numerous students, teachers and coaches saw his potential at running. And for sure, the students who had been chosen are those great and aspiring ones.

Xander said that running is already important to him now because it is the very sport that is helping him know himself more.

The Boy from MARAWI: Afgha Sacar Masigal

We’ve heard stories from students who made a name in in their schools or those people who are known and adored by everyone. His story is something we should know, he may not be that popular or known in school but his story is quite compelling, worthy to be listened to by everyone.

He’s arrival was unexpected, his presence was shocking. Days after the start of school year 2017-2018, he was enrolled at Asian College of Technology and as usual, the students from different levels especially those who love to gossip, made a fuss of this late enrollee’s arrival in school. The boy’s name is Afgha Sacar Masigal, a unique and an unusual name for those people who don’t know him including myself. He is a grade 10 student, was born on the second of October, year 2001.

Afgha was welcomed by students in the higher years especially by his batch mates. No longer than twenty-four hours, he was able to befriend the boys in his year level. Knowing the fact that he was a new student, he was uncomfortable and  was trying to adjust to his new life. A life he never knew would come.

What’s interesting about Afgha Masigal’s life is that he was one of those people who experienced the harsh tragedy that horrified all citizens in Minadnao. Yes, in Mindanao, he came from Marawi City where all the chaotic bombings happened. He travelled here in Cebu to escape the disasters in his hometown and continue his normal life. Every Muslim in Mindanao couldn’t handle the harsh reality they were under. The terrorists were once a story to scare children. It was a possible tragedy but we all ignored it. Experiencing it first hand was a huge news to them. In my interview with him, he said what happened in Mindanao was really scary. He was sad and discouraged by what his hometown had experienced. Who could blame him? He’s a boy who once had a great life but has to leave everything behind to survive and escape the truth.

Coming here in Cebu made him fine and he was slightly happy to the things that happened to him her in Cebu but even though he made memories and friends here, he still misses the place he used to call home—where he can be himself and not be afraid of judgmental people; where he is comfortable and familiar to the things around him. Because according to him, he was not able to get out of his comfort zone when he’s here. It is heartbreaking to know that he can not come out of his own shell and embrace what he really is.

With the help of his friends and the strength he is getting from his family he was able to cope up with the changes.  Being alone is something he doesn't want. So receiving love and support from those people who made him strong is something he really longs for. He was able to go  out with his friends and do things he likes even though he strongly misses his home, he as still able to smile. His advice to people who experienced loss not only in Mindanao but as well as to everyone else, “Don’t do things that makes you happy because happiness in only temporary but instead, be strong on the upcoming problems that will happen to your life.”

A normal boy who  was once happy until the arrival of terrorists who invaded Marawi City,  was forced to leave and continue his life with no fear but struggling with utmost optimism to come to face his new life.

BEHIND THE GLITZ AND GLAMOUR

Asian College of Technology, the home of many students is a bearer of good education. Surely, a prosperous and afloat school like this has been rich in history, and by history I mean students. We know very well that ACT has a lot of thriving a committed learners, most especially including the fact that it is  a Multiple Intelligences School. Let’s mention one for an example.

Angel Kyle Calma, a proactive and practical Asianista. Surely someone described as this has done a lot of things in school or for the school rather. He has been a busy bee since he set foot in ACT. Trying to balance schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and family life. He has been someone who can handle situations easily. Indeed, he too has tons of friends and can make much more. And, we all know him for his fabulous glitz and glamour and strutting but it’s not all about just the fun and laying off, he has to get through impediments to earn titles and gain keys to the things like these.

Since ACT is known for being a Multiple Intelligences School, students have been joining competitions in and out of the campus. And in a way to serve the school, Angel has been doing documentations for as long as he could.

Not only is he doing documentations, but he also has been compiling them and finding ways to keep the information as a whole, and that’s one of a skill. He also tags along with the Junior High School department teachers. He is someone who isn’t shy to help anyone. He helps them with their unfinished work, especially when they have to do a lot. He is willing to do errands, he is always there to lend a hand. And aside from that, one of his many hobbies is to embrace the art of photography. During school events, Angel makes sure he gets to capture every single moment of it. He can’t just do it alone though. He gets accompanied by his fellow classmates, Tiffany, Gianne and Jehramae. And together, they convey the real world through specs and lenses. Aside from those, he can also do physical work.

Balls, nets and the heat. That’s right. Angel can be very keen when learning the basics and standards of Volleyball. Being the bustling person he is, first thing that comes to mind when he isn’t really doing anything is to play the sport.

And of course let’s not forget how good of a dancer he can be. He goes from hip-hop to fragile and graceful contemporary and the like. He has joined multiple dance-related routines. From short openings, to heated dance competitions, Angel loves it all. Ever since he has arrived, he has participated for the Family Day dances, both accomplishing the goal of first place for Category C. He also joined dance performances outside the school like for the ACT Pardo Night and let’s not forget how he did that fantabulous split during the Grade 7’s performance for their modern dance last year.

And that ladies and gentlemen, is one example of a good student in a good school. Angel Kyle Calma is a representation that you too, can handle matters (whether huge or not) the way he does.
